Cheverny vineyards are likely some of the best kept secrets, in all of The Loire. Cheverny might regularly be included in conversation when discussing great Chateaux.
Cheverny has two formidable Chateaux; Cheateau Cheverny & Chateau Chambord.
Both are well worth seeing and either can be included, in place of a vineyard excursion, during a full day Cheverny wine tour.
Cheverny wine is unlikely to get a mention when discussing the great wine regions of France. Whilst this is a shame, and somewhat unfair, it does have its advantages. Cheverny produces red and white blends from a significant number of grapes. Including Gamay, Pinot Noir and Malbec for its red wine; and Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay and Fie Gris for its dry white.
The finest wine, made by the greatest winemakers of Cheverny, equals the quality of any region of The Loire Valley.
Pleasant surprises are not limited to Cheverny’s light, red or citrus, white wines.
Sparkling Cremant De Loire wine is also made using an array of grape varieties, including Chenin Blanc and Chardonnay. Although in truth, despite occasionally presenting good value, the quality of the sparkling wine rarely stands up, in comparison, to good sparkling Vouvray.
Cheverny’s jewell in the crown is a rare white wine made from a grape called Romorantin.
Under a seperate, individual appellation, Romarantin is vinified 100% and bottled under the Cour-Cheverny region.
Legend has it that Romorantin was originally brought here from the Burgundy wine region, by Francois 1er, during the sixteenth century.
Such confidence did Francois have in this grape variety, and the nearby town of Romorantin (which he rallied to have installed as France's capital - unsuccessfully), that he banned the Burgundians from growing it.
Ristricting the Romorantin grape to the most exclusive, prime vineyards resulted in wines of great intensity and formidable complexity.
Hundreds of years on, and Romarantin can only be found in small amounts in Cour Cheverny - the only apellation legally permitted to bottle this unique grape variety.
What does Romorantin wine taste like?
Being closely related to Aligote and Chardonnay, there can certainly be some of those buttery textures when this grape variety is oaked.
Romorantin is often described as floral, sometimes with honeyed notes and intense mineral undertones. Romorantin's ability to age makes it one of the stand out white wines of the Loire Valley.
Romorantin is certainly worth trying during any Cheverny wine tour.

Cheverny wine tour.

Cremant De Loire is the apellation with which sparkling wine is bottled across The Loire Valley.
During your Cheverny wine tour, the winemakers will explain the key details of how this appellation was developed, to offer wines similar to that of Champagne.
Certain regions, such as Vouvray, Touraine, Saumur and Montlouis are permitted to produce sparkling wine that bears the name of their region on the label.
Regions such as Cheverny and Anjou are permitted to produce bubbly bearing the Cremant De Loire label from an extensive variety of grapes. The same grapes can be used to make sparkling white or rosé wine.
